The residency programme at Espaço Alkantara

Espaço Alkantara is a historic building in Lisbon’s Santos neighbourhood, home to Alkantara since 2007. Through its residency programme, Alkantara supports research, experimentation, and creation in the performing arts. In 2019, we are pleased to announce a series of residencies that will be made available through a call for proposals.

We are currently accepting applications for the following periods:

  • May 7-19
  • May 20-31
  • June 24 – July 7
  • July 8-21
  • July 22 – August 4
  • August 5-18

Applicants may request a single period or combine two, back-to-back periods. The maximum duration of any residency is 4 weeks.

What does the programme offer?

Artists in residence have full and exclusive access to the studio at Espaço Alkantara and shared use of the common spaces (kitchen and office). More information about Espaço Alkantara, as well as a list of available technical equipment, can be found here.

In addition, we are able to provide the following:

  • Weekly stipend for a maximum of 4 participants (300€ per participant per week)
  • Accommodation for maximum of 2 participants (private room in shared apartment)
  • Travel costs to Lisbon (max. 500€)
  • Technical support, by arrangement
  • Project management, budget, or funding advice, if desired
What do we expect?

Artists in residence will be asked to host one public session during their residency period. In the past, these public sessions have included work-in-progress showings, informal conversations about current research interests, film screenings, and workshop formats. We are happy to discuss your project and ideas for the public session ahead of the residency period.

Who should apply?

We invite proposals for projects at any stage of development (research, creation, development, or revision of an existing work) from individual artists or collectives, living in Portugal or abroad. For this call, we will be giving particular attention to proposals from artists who have not participated in our residency programme before.

We are most interested in projects grounded in experimental or research-based practices in the performing arts — generally, theatre, dance, or performance. We welcome proposals that approach or involve other practices or disciplines.

Although we are only able to provide financial and in-kind support to a limited number of participants, larger groups may apply. Amateur or student groups are not eligible.
