Lucy McCormick is in Lisbon to work on her new project, Blonde Ambition, and to explore the local queer scene. Catch her informal chat and showing on March 23.
Blonde Ambition is a subversive, immersive, narrative concept album about a woman who gets overwhelmed in a supermarket. Large scale and spectacular, though still with Lucy’s scrappy DIY aesthetics, the performance uses the most mundane narrative possible as an absurd & hilarious vehicle to tackle deep existential questions around individualism and queer survival under late capitalism. It is designed for club/gig spaces with audience standing and activity all around them. The project is Lucy’s most ambitious show to date and will feature original music written by Lucy which will form the backbone of the show. Current influences include Die Antwood, FKA Twiggs and Jungle Pussy. Live Artist Morven Mulgrew will create absurd, sculptural, interactive set pieces which morph into costume, such as a sofa which turns into a dress when Lucy stands up off it. The show’s title is reminiscent of Madonna’s legendary concert tour. The ridiculous concept of trying to replicate this scale of pop iconography continues Lucy’s interest in marrying virtuosity with ineptitude. Whilst individual elements will be high production value, the shows inevitable failure to live up to its premise offers hilarious subversion of the pop cultural phenomenons we engage with.
