Uýra Sodoma is a Biologist, Master of Ecology of the Amazon, Visual Artist and Art educator for traditional communities. Living in an industrial territory in the middle of the Forest, they transform themselves to become a Walking Tree, making use of organic materials only. They have taken part in over 50 collective exhibitions nationally and internationally and presented five individual shows, including their debut at the Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the Currier Museum of Art, USA. They have exhibited at the 34th São Paulo Art Biennale, the Manifesta Biennale in Kosovo, the 13th São Paulo Architecture Biennale and the 1st Biennale of the Amazons, as well as winning the EDP Art Prize – Instituto Tomie Ohtake, the 2022 PIPA Prize, the 2023 YES to Racial Equality Prize and the 2023 Arte Rio FOCO Prize. Uýra uses their body as a device for telling stories about different Natures through photoperformance, performance and installations. They are interested in living systems and their violations. Through the lens of diversity, dissidence, functioning and adaptation, they (re)tell natural stories from belief systems and diasporas found in the forest-city landscape. Their works are held in national archives and by collectors and Institutions in Brazil, such as the Pinacoteca in São Paulo and Instituto PIPA, and abroad, such as the Castello de Rivoli (Italy), the Currier Museum of Art (USA) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (USA).
