After having collaborated on Marco Mendonça’s piece Blackface (Alkantara Festival 2023), Heverton Harieno and Marco Mendonça come together again to create Blackface, the Documentary.
Blackface is a musical lecture-performance that shifts between stand-up and fantasy, satire and physical theatre, burlesque and documentary theatre. In it, Marco Mendonça traces the origins of blackface and how this racist practice was used to portray Black people as inferior members of Portuguese society.
In the documentary, directed by Herverton Harieno, Marco Mendonça answers questions about the creation of the piece. With footage collected over months of research, the film offers a look at the nuances and motivations around the show.

Heverton Harieno is a videomaker borned in Belo Horizonte in 1991. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from UNA University Center (Brazil) and has Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Beira Interior UBI (Portugal). He has experience as Videomaker, Process Analyst, Cultural Producer, Music Producer, Screenwriter and Director. His filmography includes a medium-length film and audiovisual projects shoted in more than 5 countries. Marco Mendonça was born in Mozambique in 1995 and lives in Lisbon since 2007. He graduated in theatre at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema. He works regularly with the company Os Possessos. He was a trainee at Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, where he worked with João Pedro Vaz, Tiago Rodrigues and Faustin Linyekula. He was part of shows by Liesbeth Gritter (Kassys), Tonan Quito and Mala Voadora. He debuted as author and co-creator, alongside João Pedro Leal and Eduardo Molina, in "Parlamento Elefante", a project that won the Amélia Rey Colaço scholarship. In...
