Rodrigo Ribeiro Saturnino aka ROD is a researcher and visual artist. PhD in Sociology from the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, and post-doctorate from the Centre for Communication and Society Studies at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Minho, where they are currently researching digital platforms on the Internet and algorithmic racism. They have published in several academic and scientific journals nationally and internationally. As a visual artist, their practice focuses on decolonial criticism. They have participated in a number of solo and collective exhibitions, including at the Feira Gráfica de Lisboa (2020), Casa do Capitão (2021), Espaço Damas (2021), Largo Residências’ “Bairro em Festa” Festival (2021), Galeria Not a Museum (2021), MAAT — Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (2022) and Municipal Galleries of Lisbon (2022/2023). In addition, they have taken part in festivals and projects such as Walk Talk Azores Festival 2020, the “Community as Immunity” project, the “First Draft” project by Teatro do Bairro Alto, “Training Field” (2021) and “De/Codify Belém” by Colectivo Faca. They developed the stage design for the piece “House with Trees inside”, part of the project “Pé — Dehumanisation Prefix” together with Cláudia Semedo, Gisela Casimiro and Kalaf Epalang, among other artists. Currently they are in residence at Largo Residência to initiate the project “The place I came from”. They are a founding member of UNA — União Negra das Artes (Black Arts Union) and Coletivo Afrontosas.
