Dzudza is a dance born from the noise, markets and commutes – from bodies that insist on rising together.
Dzudza is a dance performance for 12 performers, inspired by the atmosphere of Xiquelene Market on the outskirts of Maputo. Drawing from the sounds, rhythms, and collective energy of urban life, the piece reflects on resilience in a world shaped by borders, violence, and displacement. Through intense physicality, rhythmic steps, collective movement, and sung voices, the performers construct constantly shifting images of tension, support, and celebration.
As is characteristic of the work of Idio Chichava, the performers mobilize the whole body through dance and song, in service of a powerful stage central to the work is the capulana — a printed fabric that symbolizes identity, protection, and belonging — which functions both as costume and as an extension of movement.
Dzudza is Maputo seen from the periphery: vibrant, restless, and alive.
Presented as part of Alkantara Festival 2026, within the framework of the Salavisa European Dance Award, an initiative of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in partnership with leading institutions from the European dance sector.
The Salavisa European Dance Award 2026 ceremony will take place following the performance.
