A playful invitation to shift perspective — from a plate of rice and beans, potatoes and salad to a floral camouflage that makes visible rather than hides.

At MAAT’s invitation, Alkantara presents a programme of performances in dialogue with works from the exhibition Turn around. A look at the EDP Foundation Art Collection.

For this programme, we challenged two artists to create new performances: Tita Maravilha and Vânia Doutel Vaz, artist-performers who use humour in very particular ways: to seduce, to unsettle, to create unexpected situations and encounters.

These are some of the provocations we come across in the new performances they have created – Prato Feito(dish of the day) by Tita Maravilha and REPARA (Repair) by Vânia Doutel Vaz – which are presented simultaneously. Here, we also see what makes them unique and entirely distinct: Tita Maravilha’s excess, exaggeration and desire to tell stories, alongside Vânia Doutel Vaz’s minimalism, restraint and sophisticated irony.

Together, they invite us to look at the works in the exhibition from different perspectives and to notice what makes us human.

Note it down
The performances by Tita Maravilha & Vânia Doutel Vaz begin at 3pm, at the exhibition entrance, next to Luísa Cunha’s work Turn Around, and last for one hour. Together, the artists welcome the audience and invite them to follow them.

The two performances take place simultaneously in different spaces: Tita Maravilha’s Prato Feito is presented in dialogue with Rodrigo Oliveira’s work Marmitex, Guggenheim ibérico, while Vânia Doutel Vaz’s REPARA engages with Fernanda Fragateiro’s Construir É Destruir É Construir.

Each person can decide whom to follow, where to watch from and how long to spend watching each performance. The audience is free to move between the two performances and explore the exhibition’s other 88 works.

Tita Maravilha

Tita Maravilha studied Performing Arts at the University of Brasília. She describes herself as an “inventor of universes” and says that she brings into her artistic processes “the pains and pleasures of being a dissident body”. Born in Brazil, she took part in various performances and projects in her home country before moving to Portugal, where she has lived since 2018. A multidisciplinary artist, she develops the project Trypas Corassão — a powerful blend of electronic music and performance — and is the creator of several original works, including Tita...

Vânia Doutel Vaz

Vânia Doutel Vaz, Angolan, born in Setúbal, is a performer and creator working in the field of dance. In a hybrid territory between performance, choreography and interdisciplinary collaboration, she uses the idea of the body as an archive and a vehicle for fiction, focusing on relational questions. She is interested in creating a rotation of points of observation, allowing different subjectivities to emerge through the dialogue between bodies, gazes and presences. In this way, she seeks, through the relationship between performer and audience, to foster the emergence...
