Performance

La Escalera transforms cleaning into an artistic and resistant act. Álvaro Silva, the work’s creator and performer, draws from his experience as a "cleaning boy" to reflect how struggling artists are forced to take on other jobs to survive. Inspired by Silva’s family history, this piece honours those who perform this essential work.

Here, the mop becomes a symbol, a tool of service and expression. Meanwhile, cleaning is redefined, through repetitive gestures, as a commitment to creation and community. More than being an individual act, it is a collective service, establishing a deep connection.

La Escalera upholds the dignity of the profession, showing how the everyday can become art. The invisible is made visible, offering a reflection on solidarity and the recognition of a communal labour that is ever-present yet rarely celebrated.
