This piece seeks to raise awareness about the impact of our excessive consumption of plastic – a material that remains in our hands for mere moments yet lingers on the planet for centuries. While estimates suggest that it takes 405 years to decompose, the truth is uncertain: it could be 200, 450 or even 600 years, as not enough time has passed to know for sure.
Let’s think about the number 405 in years: it is staggering. If we consider that the average lifespan is 85 years, then it is almost four entire lifetimes or about six generations that will bear the consequences of a plastic bottle that was not recycled or reused today.
This work invites both younger audiences and adults to critically reflect on the ecological and environmental crisis, with a focus on ocean pollution and the urgent need to rethink our choices.
