Samba, samples and dance in a circle of celebration.
The opening night of the 2025 Alkantara Festival is celebrated in a ‘roda’, or circle, of Afro-Brazilian sounds, bodies, and cultures.
Roda de Sample — a project with over a decade of events around the world, led in Portugal by Ágatha Cigarra — interweaves art and technology with the desire to create things together. Each circle brings together producers and collectors of sounds from different contexts and disciplines, celebrating a multiplicity of voices, samples, instruments, lights and performances.
For this evening, the invitation to take part in the circle is extended to Coletivo Gira — a movement founded by immigrant women in Portugal who, through rodas de samba, create spaces of resistance, joy, and gender equality.
Seven women samba players and four sampling artisans gather in a single circle and invite us to join them in celebrating the acts of listening and dancing, tradition and invention.

Born in São Paulo — the city where she grew up in the daily flows of immigration and developed tactics for street expression as a member of party collectives — Ágatha CIGARRA has been a DJ, performer, music producer and cultural agent for over 15 years. She has spent half of that time in the Lisbon scene, working in partnership with the city and dissident artists. She has held residencies in the city’s foremost venues and is one of the driving forces behind the rise of street carnival in Portugal. Carniçeira, BLOCU, MeioFio (Alkantara Festival),...

Coletivo Gira is a movement founded by immigrant women in Portugal with the aim of promoting Afro-Brazilian culture and gender equality through samba. Founded in 2021 in Lisbon, Coletivo Gira was born from the initiative of four immigrant women with different life stories, backgrounds, origins, and professions — but united by a shared love for samba and their deep-rooted heritage. From this initial idea, and from their own lived experience of the historical barriers faced by women in society, they decided to form a collective. The group’s core line-up features...

Sónia Trópicos is a producer and DJ, born on the day of the Carnation Revolution and raised on the Margem Sul. She explores electronic sounds from the Lusophone spectrum, focusing on the use of marked and melancholic rhythms through synths and samples. With a creative journey spanning several artistic fields, she released her first productions and remixes in 2022. She has two EPs to her name — Astral Anormal and Singela — and has contributed remixes and productions to various collaborative projects and other artists.

MARIBELL is a DJ and music producer, creator of sonic atmospheres that cross borders and celebrate diversity. They blend rhythms from various African diasporas, such as afro-house, batida, and gqom, with baile funk and its subgenres, creating dynamic sets that connect cultures and get the dancefloor moving in a global celebration of sound, movement, and culture.

Multi-instrumentalist, DJ, and performer with a remarkable 20-year career, N▲N▼ is a master of infernal music and its delights, blending the introspection of jazz, the fury of queer womanhood, and the Afro-Brazilian ancestry of Brazil’s northeast, her homeland, to create unforgettable sonic stories. Her expertise and improvisational experience shape a voice that longs to speak and play in many languages. Through afrobeats, dark techno, baile funk, and other subversive sounds, her incendiary stage presence and profound musical wisdom guide audiences on a journey...
